Chris Chia and family visiting Yayasan Pondok Hayat, Surabaya

Last December, Chris Chia together with his family and friends visited Yayasan Pondok Hayat, a non-profit foundation based in Surabaya, Indonesia.  Its mission is to help unwed mothers and orphans – to provide them with education on abortion and a shelter for unwed mothers and abandoned babies.  Chris spent five days there in several of the Yayasan’s centres which include a nursery, a school and of course, the place where abandoned children call home.  The visit included a Christmas party for almost 350 children from the slum areas in Surabaya where Chris’ children demonstrated their tae kwon do skills, and of course Chris and friends playing host to children games, dancing and singing.  A smaller party of around 100 children was conducted the next day with the same themes.  The trip also included painting and drawing with the orphans, training the unwed mothers in cooking and simple hygiene, a trip to the zoo and pizza hut! It was a memorable experience for those involved to see the light in the eyes of the orphans and their happy nature notwithstanding the struggles they have been through.
